The following are excerpts from a presentation made by Gilbert Jenkins, an oil industry consultant, to the 10th Annual APS Conference, Middle East Strategy to the Year 2000, held in Nicosia on Oct. 7-9.

Summary: "Fifty years ago the petrochemical industry was regarded as a minor part of oil refining. Now global petrochemicals demand is equivalent to about 10% of world oil demand. In good times, naphtha or petroleum gases can have value added by a factor of five, e.g. $200 to $1000 per tonne. In bad times, the value added may be only trebled resulting in operating losses. ...
