Mother Russia's new red carpet

In the 1985 movie "White Nights,'Mikhail Baryshnikov played a Soviet ballet star who, like himself, defected-- but years later is abducted and brought back to Moscow to perform. Thus, there was a special irony in the Kremlin's invitation last week to the 39-year-old superstar to return to his homeland to appear again at the Bolshoi--voluntarily and temporarily.

Baryshnikov, who slipped away froma touring dance troupe in 1974 and is now a U.S. citizen, said he would consider the offer. His was only the latest such invitation. Similar calls ...
