BILL HUIE bought The American Mercury from Lawrence Spivak in 1950, and lo! there appeared in America a wonderfully bright conservative monthly. Huie attracted national attention with an article called "Is Harry Truman a Liar?' in which he came up with documentation for his thesis--a thesis that, if historically wobbly (as, presumably, the Watergate crime will prove to be), nevertheless riveted attention. This was in the heated pre-convention season of 1951-52, and here and there it is alleged that that article might have proved marginally ...
