CASPIAN SEA: COASTLINE COUNTRIES LAUNCH RESCUE PROGRAMME

Summary: The five countries that border the land-locked Caspian Sea have agreed to join forces to protect its fragile ecology, through a programme supported by the United Nations. Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Iran are to set up a joint organisation mandated to draw up a "Programme for the Caspian Sea ecology". While the area is not under immediate threat, the coastline countries intend through joint control to prevent the sort of ecological catastrophe that has befallen the Aral and Black Seas.
