Summary: Since public health is principally a matter of national concern, a public health policy on the European level remains subordinate to the often conflicting wishes of Member States. Dr Seehofer, the German Minister for Health, attending a recent meeting of the European Parliament's Committee on the Environment, Consumer Protection and Public Health, lamented this state of affairs describing the setting up of common policy in the field, as a priority.
