Corps combats zebra mussels

In December 1990, Monroe, Mich., was cut off from its Lake Erie water source. For 56 hours the city's 100,000 residents depended on emergency water reserves until investigators discovered the problem: The intake pipes of the city's 18-million gallon water treatment facility were clogged -- not with sediment or trash, but with millions of dime-sized dreissena polymorpha, or zebra mussels.

The mussels were first found in Great Lakes water plant intake pipes in 1988. But little attention was given to the striped mollusk until it turned up in the Monroe plant.
