The Government projects rice production to increase by 2.01% annually in the next five years, from 49,169,000 tons in 1994 to 53,243,000 tons in 1998 and the planting area to expand by 298,000 hectares, mainly as a result of new paddyfields outside Java. Production increases are also projected for cash crops, like corn (3.77%), soybean (3.17%) and cassava (0.2%). As a whole, the food crop sector is projected to grow by an average of 1.88% annually.
