The discovery last month of 155 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees who had been set adrift in lifeboats off the coast of Newfoundland by a West German captain awakened many Americans to the existence of the bloody separatist war on the South Asian island. Since 1983 violence between the mainly Hindu Tamil minority and the Buddhist Sinhalese majority has claimed at least 4,000 lives, most of them Tamil.
