South Sulawesi is the biggest cacao producing center in Indonesia. In 1990, the province produced 36,230 tons, accounting for 31.8% of the country's cacao production. Most of this came from smallholding plantations, amounting to 35,405 tons or 97.7%, and the rest from large private plantations, amounting to only 825 tons (2.3%).
