The regional authorities in Lombardy, northern Italy, have presented a plan to treat and dispose of industrial waste, "in particular hazardous waste, with best available technology". Under the plan, 18 new facilities would be built to treat and dispose of about 5 million tonnes of industrial waste generated by the region each year. At present, the region has the capacity to treat and dispose of almost 2.7 million tonnes.
