The price of pepper on the international market has reached an alarmingly low level. The price of black pepper, which reached US$ 5,027 thousand per ton in 1987, dropped to US$ 1,365 thousand per ton early in 1991. Meanwhile, the agency which manages Indonesia's pepper exports, i.e. Central Indonesia Trading Company (CITC), was officially dissolved late last month as a result of the Government's last year decision to deregulate the pepper trade mechanism.
