The first non-scheduled airlines in Indonesia, PT. Pelita Air Service, began as an aviation division of PT. Pertamina, called Dinas Penerbangan Pertamina, which served Pertamina's requirements and was controlled by Pertamina's management. With the increasing demand for air transportation from the public, especially from foreign oil companies under work contracts with Pertamina since oil concessions were terminated in 1963, it was deemed necessary to set up a separate company specializing in non-scheduled (chartered) flights.
