Kuwait's hydrocarbon sector was reconstructed in 1979/80 under the supervision of Shaikh Jabir. The Oil Minister then, Shaikh Ali Khalifa Al Sabah, was keen on pursuing the Emir's strategy of diversification. KPC was created in 1980 and, one year later, Santa Fe International was purchased. From then on the strategy of diversifying overseas was put in motion. Some of Gulf Oil's refining and distribution networks were acquired. More acquisitions in the subsequent years turned KPC into a trans-national operator, both in upstream and downstream sectors.
