As the quincentenary of Columbus's discovery of America approaches, other related anniversaries appear in the foreground, such as the five-hundredth anniversary of the birth of Hernan Cortes, who, after the Admiral, was the most incandescent figure in the saga of the New World. Cortes was born in the remote province of Extremadura, whence he set out for the Indies at the age of 19. In 1519 he landed in Mexico with 580 men, 16 horses, and ten bronze cannon.
