George Santayana, when he was a young philosopher, advanced the thesis that beauty is but pleasure objectified. Beauty, in this view, exists only in the beholder, as gratification caused by the forms and colors of things. But by some trick of psychology, the beholder is incapable of believing that there is no more to beauty than that, and spontaneously projects the pleasure outward, onto the things that cause it, henceforward treating it as one of their resident features.
