MAUI, Hawaii -- Although some of them are major importers, U.S. apparel manufacturers meeting here appear solidly united in demanding passage of the import-slashing Textile and Apparel Enforcement Act of 1985.

A broad spectrum of apparel manufacturing -- both large and smaller companies -- seemed ready to endorse the controversial measure, although it is adamantly opposed by the industry's retail customers.
