MIKHAIL GORBACHEV's first serious act of diplomacy after being named General Secretary of ths CPSU was a less than propitious omen of things to come. President Zia ul-Haz of Pakistan had traveled to Moscow to attend the funeral of Konstantin Chernenko, only to be sat down and severely chided by Gorbachev for supporting "aggression" against Afghanistan from Pakistani soil. The new Soviet leader warned Zia in no uncertain terms that Soviet-Pakistani ties would be affected in a "7ost negative" way if he continued to support the resistance in Afghanistan.
