On February 6, only a few months after the woman who denied having borrowed her life, Muriel Gardiner died at the age of 83 in Princeton, New Jersey. On reading her obituary in The New York Times I was once again struck by the oddity of the whole Julia saga and the behavior of Lillian Hellman. How to explain it? I think the life of yet another exceptional woman who died last year may help us through the labyrinth.
