LONDON -- More than a few pin-feathers have been ruffled among England's art history establishment by a controversial book written by an unlikely author.

On the surface, "The Search for Gainsborough" is an account of a quest to prove that an ill-kempt portrait of an unknown 18th-century gentleman hanging in a shabby provincial theater was actually an early Gainsborough, and that the subject was the actor David Garrick.
