It's amazing how many parts of the human body don't seem to have any useful purpose. Take the sinuses, for instance. No one knows for certain why these air pockets in the skull exist. It has been suggested that, at one time in human development, they aided the sense of smell--a distinct advantage for those of our ancestors who depended on their noses to sense danger or seek food.
