The number of AIDS victims has more than doubled in the last year from 3,000 to 6,857--and many more Americans have been exposed to the virus than previously thought.
AIDS--acquired immunodeficiency syndrome--destroys the body's defenses against infection and has caused at least 3,000 deaths in the United States. The disease is usually fatal within three years of diagnosis.
