The U.S. could wind up with trouble on its hands here in Panama even though the nation's newly elected President, Nicolas Ardito Barletta, is staunchly pro-American and anti-Communist.
Behind this danger is the threat of strikes and violent protests by supporters of the defeated candidate, three-time President Arnulfo Arias.
Barletta, a former vice president of the World Bank and the choice of Panama's military forces who run the country, was declared the winner on May 16 by a razor-thin 1,713 votes out of more than 700,000 ballots cast.
