Mondale closes in on the big prize. (Walter F. Mondale)

Does Walter Mondale finally have a lock on the Democratic nomination for President?

The answer from politicians and neutral analysts around the country: The former Vice President is right on the edge of wrapping up victory over Senator Gary Hart of Colorado, long before the party convention opens in San Francisco on July 16.

Most experts, still squirming in chagrin over earlier predictions that went awry, agree that Mondale's decisive victory in the April 10 Pennsylvania primary makes a Hart comeback unlikely, even in a year filled with surprises.
