EVERYBODY NEEDS a hero. Some liberals, however, prefer political martyrs to men on horseback--Alger Hiss, Karen Silkwood, and why not Dashiell Hammett? Hammett's qualifications are pretty impressive: a distinguished career, influential friends, a reputation for integrity, a great profile.
