Ross Macdonald's Lew Archer detective series has been called by the New York Times the best such series ever written by an American. On the evidence I've accumulated so far, I'd give that claim a ringing endorsement. While much mystery fiction remains for me no more than a suspenseful story, Macdonald demonstrates the possibilities for creating genuine works of art in the genre. Acclaimed practitioners of today, such as Ian Rankin, Tony Hillerman and Walter Mosley, are building on Macdonald's accomplishments.
