IN AUGUST, THE VICTORIA STATE OPERA presented four opera productions, all new to that city, although two of them had been staged elsewhere, including the rightly renowned Nicholas Hytner version of Xerxes, which was created by English National Opera in 1985 to mark the 300th anniversary of Handel's birth.
