Franz Kafka's The Trial is an acclaimed modernist masterpiece. It is also a strange, disturbing, and even frustrating reading experience. Kafka composed it in 1914 and 1915 and then abandoned it, leaving several unfinished chapters. Famously, he told his great friend and literary executor Max Brod to place it with the many manuscripts he wished destroyed after his death. This was shortly before he, at last. succumbed to the tuberculosis that was the ultimate burden he bore in his troubled life.
