ELIZABETH SIMCOE was 25 when she arrived for the first time in Upper Canada in mid-1792. She and her family stayed at Kingston for about three weeks, on their way to visit the strategically pivotal fortifications at Niagara. Kingston was then a military and naval station, the most important town west of Montreal -- consisting, Simcoe estimated in her diary, of about 50 buildings, one of them stone, the rest wood. This village was a far cry from the comparatively grand town of Quebec, where the Simcoes had spent the previous seven months; and Quebec was in turn much less ...
