Sudan
Lt-General Umar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir (right) took power in Sudan in a military coup in June 1989, and has run a military dictatorship with a programme of Islamization ever since.
The Sudan People's Liberation Movement/ Army (SPLM/A) was formed in 1983 under the leadership of Dr. John Garang, a Dinka, who had support from the Mengistu regime in Ethiopia until it fell in 1991. The SPLA controls large areas of the South and is fighting a running battle with Bashir's Government.
