The International Telecommunications Union has approved and ratified the new V.90 standard for 56-kbps modem technology. The proprietary technologies of Rockwell Semiconductor and 3Com Corp are being upgraded to support the new standard after one year of delays. Surveys conducted among users show that large companies are ahead in using 56-kbps modems particularly in sites where it was not practical to use high-speed leased-line connections.
