These are strange and confusing times for queer Americans.

Gay visibility has never been higher, whether measured by the prominence of pop culture icons like Elton John, k.d. lang, RuPaul and others; the plethora of gay and lesbian -- themed television shows, plays and films; or the abundant media coverage of gay issues. And thanks to the heroic efforts of post-Stonewall activists, closet doors have been yanked open across America, permitting even conservatives to come out and publicly claim an identity that used to be regarded as a dirty secret.
