INTRODUCTION

Predation is a powerful force shaping prey characteristics at many levels (Curios 1976, Polis et al. 1989, Endler 1991). At the level of individuals, it can shape features such as foraging behavior, (micro)habitat use and activity periods (Charnov et al. 1976, Polis 1981, Werner and Gilliam 1984, Lima and Dill 1990). It can also affect population level parameters, including survivorship schedules (Polis and Farley 1980) and sex ratios.
