Buddhism is frequently criticized as a religion lacking in social ethics because it is primarily concerned with personal salvation. However, a scrutiny of Buddhist teachings on personal conduct will find that they do feature principles which can be interpreted and applied to a social ethical theory. Thailand, in providing an opportunity to scrutinize social and political issues from a Third World point of view and at a structural level within the global market, furnishes an ideal framework where one may investigate Buddhist social ethics.
