The culture of secrecy, a residue of a century of war, causes conspiracy theories to multiply
Governmental secrecy breeds stupidity, in government decision making and in the thinking of some citizens. Secrecy helped produce Oliver Stone, the paranoiac whose 1991 movie "JFK" found a mass audience for the notion that the assassination of President Kennedy was the work of a vast right-wing conspiracy. This caused Congress to create the Assassination Records Review Board in the hope that openness would set the country free from dark suspicions.
