Fifty years ago this month, a young Catholic monk published a book about his spiritual conversion.
He was a worldly sort of fellow _ born in France, educated at Columbia University in Manhattan, rich in tweedy friends, sophisticated in a manner few people would associate with coarse woolen hoods and farm work _ a man not apparently inclined toward poverty, chastity or obedience.
Before he'd become a Trappist monk at the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky, in fact, he'd tried his hand at reviewing books and plays, and even wrote a novel.
