Moroccan colonial soldiers: between selective memory and collective memory.(Beyond Colonialism and Nationalism in North Africa)

From: Arab Studies Quarterly (ASQ) | Date: March 22, 1998| Author: | Copyright information

The historical significance of the Moroccan colonial soldiers has been downplayed both by the French and the nationalist Moroccans. The French and other European historians have perpetuated the view that it was only Europeans who fought and died in the two world wars. On the other hand, after gaining independence, the Moroccan nationalists chose to ignore the colonial soldiers because they believed them to be contrary to nationalist ideals. These observations highlight the need for a historical viewpoint that is neither colonial nor nationalist.
