Judge Holden in Cormac McCarthy's 'Blood Meridian' is a metaphor of amoral colonial expansion. The judge tricks a group of wandering scalp hunters into giving him jurisdiction over their physical and spiritual lives, inventing territory and frontier by his acts of naming what he discovers. McCarthy's characters view war as the basic enterprise of humanity in this book.
