Afro-American civil rights leader Washington T. Booker influenced the periodicals 'Colored American Magazine' and 'Alexander's Magazine' in promoting civil rights issues in Boston, MA between 1895 and 1915. The 'Colored American Magazine' valued Washington's support although some of its articles slightly diverged from his views on issues such as lynching and suffrage. However, the militant approach of the 'Alexander's Magazine,' reflected Washington's clout on the periodical in spite of his attempts to downplay it. Both journals highlighted contradictions in the movement.
