United States: Stimulus to aid upgrade of hydropower plant in Swain-Graham county area.

A hydroelectric power plant on the Little Tennessee River will get up to $13 million in federal stimulus money to help upgrade equipment.

The Cheoah dam and powerhouse, built in 1919 near where the river flows into Tennessee from Swain and Graham counties, helps power a Tennessee aluminum smelting plant run by its owner's parent company, Alcoa.

The company plans to replace four 90-year-old turbines, making the powerhouse more energy-efficient.
