In recent years, definitions of sexual coercion have faced increased scrutiny (e.g., Muehlenhard, Powch, Phelps, & Giusti, 1992). In particular, it seems critical to understand the means by which it is possible to establish nonconsent--a hallmark of coercive interactions. Some researchers have directly asked their participants whether they overtly demonstrated their nonconsent to their dating partner (Muehlenhard & Linton, 1987) or whether the perpetrator used pressure or force to overcome resistance (Koss, Gidycz, & Wisniewski, 1987).
