The Kwangju Biennale exhibition has greatly contributed to the status of South Korea in the world of art. The emphasis of the show is on hybrid identities and globalization. For example, Chen Zhen's 'Daily Incantation' reflects the artist's cultural dislocation from his native Shanghai.

The contrast between the first and second mountings of the Kwangju Biennale echoes the shift that has taken place over the past decade or so in the international art world as a whole.
