Sutton Hoo is the site near Woodbridge in Suffolk which unexpectedly produced an Anglo-Saxon ship-burial packed with treasure on the eve of the Second World War. Over the centuries, both before and after that spectacular discovery, it has been subject to a series of investigations, some of them only recorded long after they had taken place. It has also attracted interpretations ranging from prosaic to bizarre. This book is, as its author says, a guide to both the real and the imagined Sutton Hoo, and it is a very good guide.
