Frank Woodruff Buckles has seen many firsts in his life: the first airplanes, the first televisions, even the first teddy bears. But there's still one more first he wants to witness: a national World War I memorial in Washington, D.C.

A memorial is something, such as a statue, that honors a person or an event. Buckles remembers World War I well. He was one of nearly 5 million Americans who served in the war, which lasted from 1914 to 1918. Today, the 108-year-old is the country's only living World War I veteran.
