Retailers, Suppliers Aim for Year-Round Sales.(increasing candy sales)

NEW YORK -- Seasonal candy sales continue to drive the confectionery business, but many retailers and suppliers are stepping up efforts to make the category a source of more stable year-round revenue.

Valentine's Day remains perhaps the best period of the year for candy sales and the success or failure of that holiday can help determine the strength of the candy business for the entire year. For example, in 1997 candy sales for Valentine's Day rose 7.2%, which helped lift total confectionery sales 2.9% for the year, according to the National Confectioners Association.
