The content of John Winthrop's "Christian Charitie" changes when the speech is read as one intended for people who would gather for the 1630 sailing of the English Puritans and not only those who had heard it aboard ship. Such an occasion gave its themes of dependence and reassurance urgency. Winthrop insisted that the people committed to the Colony and the people who remained at home remain faithful to their promises.
