One of the most frequently used frameworks for analyzing patient utilization of healthcare services is the behavioral model developed by Andersen, Aday, and others. This conceptual framework uses a systems perspective to integrate a range of individual, environmental, and provider-related variables associated with decisions to seek care. The focus of our analysis is on the environmental and provider-related factors that influence utilization, which we refer to as "contextual" variables because they measure the context or milieu in which utilization occurs.
