Thomas Cranmer: A Life. By Diarmaid MacCulloch. (New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 1996. Pp. xii, 692. $35.00.)
This is a mighty volume; obviously lengthy, it is well researched and thought provoking, and it tackles a difficult subject well. It also contains unnecessary detail that interrupts the reader's pleasure, but ultimately the book satisfies the reader's curiosity. MacCulloch never lets his obvious enthusiasm cloud his historical objectivity. The claim that "this book tells a man's life story" is made good (1).
