The conversion of a monastery into a hotel in Santa Maria do Bouro, Brago, Portugal, exemplifies the success of the country's program of turning ancient structures into state-run hotels. The monastery is situated on top of a small hill enclosed by the huge walls of the church. Parts of the monastery date back to the 12th century and a building set on a great stone platform dates back to the 16th century. Architect Eduardo Souto de Moura was the man behind the conversion of the monastery.
