In 1994, after the centre left won the general election in Italy, Gianfranco Fini, at that time leader of the National Alliance but still secretary of the neo-fascist MSI (Movimento Sociale Italiano), stated in an interview that Mussolini remained the major Italian statesman of the century. Reactions to Fini's statement were overwhelming. Yet, beside the political implications of this, what can be observed is that Mussolini's standing in Italy remains a matter of concern more than 50 years after his death.
