For centuries, gunpowder, a mixture of potassium nitrate, charcoal and sulfur, was the only substance available for blasting. The discovery of nitroglycerine in 1846 by Sobrero opened the way to Alfred Nobel's development of dynamite in 1864. Dynamite was much more effective than gunpowder in breaking rock because it had a faster reaction rate capable of producing a shock wave.
